Kummer Kaempfer Bonner Renshaw & Ferrario’s Energy, Utilities and Renewable Resources practice represents industrial, commercial and residential clients on a broad scope of issues related to electric, water, gas and telecommunications projects. The Firm regularly works with renewable energy developers seeking to build biomass, biogas, solar, wind, geothermal, biodiesel and energy efficiency facilities. In addition, the Firm represents clients seeking to build fossil fuel projects and the facilities needed to operate them including overhead and under ground electric lines.

We regularly negotiate agreements related to the construction of energy projects and the purchase and sale of the output of renewable energy and fossil fuel facilities. The Firm practices before the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada and the state and local government bodies for the issuance of the necessary permits and approvals to construct projects. In addition, the Firm works hand in hand with the state water engineer and the municipal or regulated utility provider to insure properly permitted water rights and water service for the Firm's clients.

Practice Highlights:

  • Negotiated and executed three hydroelectric renewable energy agreements between Sierra Pacific Power Company (Nevada Power’s sister utility) and the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (our client) for up to 6 megawatts of energy which will offset a the use of fossil fuel in the same amount
  • Negotiated and executed a biomass renewable energy contract between Sierra Pacific Power Company (Nevada Power’s sister utility) and the State of Nevada, Department of Corrections (our client) for the medium security prison which will offset a the use of fossil fuel in the same amount
  • Tried to completion a contested matter for Saguaro Power Company (our client) before the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada that resulted in an order that requires an audit of lost and accounted for gas on the southern Nevada gas distribution lines that may result in minimizing the amount of gas paid for by southern Nevada customers
